Sherritt Publishes its 2016 Sustainability Report

Sherritt International Corporation ("Sherritt") (TSX: S) is pleased to announce the release of its 2016 sustainability report. It outlines the company's sustainability approach and performance for the period between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2016. The report, which aligns with the Global Reporting Initiative's G4 Guidelines, is only available online at sustainability.sherritt.com.

As 2017 marks Sherritt's 90th anniversary in business, the theme of the company's sustainability report is 90 years of 'doing the right thing.' Additional information on this milestone is available at 90years.sherritt.com.

During the past year, Sherritt made important progress in the four commitment areas of its Sustainability Framework:

  1. Providing a Safe and Rewarding Workplace
    • Met its total recordable injury frequency target of less than 0.50 injuries per 200,000 work hours and its lost-time injury frequency target of less than 0.18 injuries per 200,000 work hours; and improved both rates over 2015
    • Saw Sherritt's President and Chief Executive Officer join the "30% Club Canada," whose goal is to ensure that at least 30% of board seats in the country are held by women by 2019

  2. Operating Ethically
    • Were shortlisted to Corporate Knights' Future 40 Responsible Corporate Leaders in Canada (and were subsequently named to this list in 2017: www.corporateknights.com/reports/future-40/)
    • Received zero human rights-related complaints

  3. Demonstrating Environmental Responsibility
    • Recorded zero high-severity environmental incidents
    • Achieved an overall reduction of 4% in Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions compared to the previous year

  4. Engaging Shareholders and Benefitting Communities
    • Contributed more than $750 million in economic benefits to host communities and countries
    • Recorded a 45% decrease in community grievances compared to 2015
