(Kitco News)- Gold is truly a gift from the heavens, especially in eastern Russia after gold bars fell from a cargo plane Thursday.

According to Russian media reports, about 3 tons of gold fell from a plane and on to the runway as it was taking off in the eastern city of Yakutsk. The gold belonged to Chukotka Mining and Geological Company, a subsidary of Kinross Gold.

The cargo plane was carrying a total of 9.3 tons of gold and other precious metals. The cargo door didn't close properly because of a damaged door handle. According to the reports, airport authorities recovered 172 gold bars.

With gold prices hovering around $1,316 an ounce, the spilled gold is valued at more than $115 million.

Nobody was hurt in the incident.
