ENERGY TRANSITION: Carbon capture key to green steel, Kerry says

The development and use of carbon-capture technologies for industrial sectors such as steel will be central to the push toward a decarbonized economy, according to John Kerry, the United States' Special Presidential Envoy for Climate.

Reducing the cost of these technologies will also be critical in enabling access on a wider scale and to meeting net-zero carbon targets, Kerry told a webinar on Tuesday June 15.
"In the United States, President [Joe] Biden's jobs plan aims to create the most robust support for industrial carbon capture in the world," Kerry said. "It will also establish, then pioneer, commercial carbon-capture demonstrations in key industrial sectors such as cement, steel and chemical production."
The steel industry currently produces about 7-10% of total emissions worldwide.

The sector is therefore developing carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) systems for blast furnaces to capture and store or utilize the carbon dioxide, as a commercially viable way...
