Martial law decision 'not yet affecting' steel, pig iron exports from Ukraine

Shipments of steel products and pig iron from Ukraine have not yet been affected by the country imposing restrictions under martial law, sources told Fastmarkets on Tuesday November 27.

"For the moment, I do not see any problems for civil vessels from Black Sea ports, but it is only the first day after the announcement of the martial law decision," one trader from Ukraine said on Tuesday. "Those most affected might be shipments from Mariupol."Mariupol is Ukraine's principal port on the Sea of Azov. This is linked to the Black Sea by the Kerch Strait, which is at the center of the latest conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The strait lies between Russian territory to the east and the Crimean peninsula to the west. Crimea is internationally accepted as Ukrainian territory but it was annexed by Russia in February 2014.The conflict started on November 25 when Russia prevented Ukrainian vessels from entering the Sea of Azov via the Kerch Strait.
