US plate price flat, still resisting mill increases

Prices for the steel plate in the United States held steady for the fifth week in a row after mills were unable to collect most of the price increase they announced in May.

North American plate producers announced a round of price rises last month of either $40 per ton ($2 per hundredweight) or $50 per ton ($2.50 per cwt). The announcements said the increases were effective immediately, but market participants said the higher prices still haven't been applied to a majority of the tonnage.Fastmarkets' weekly price assessment for steel cut-to-length plate carbon grade, fob mill US was unchanged at $27 per hundredweight ($540 per short ton) on Friday June 12, its lowest point of 2020 after starting the year at $32 per cwt ($640 per ton).Friday's assessment took place on the same day that plate mills announced a second round of price increases - an additional $40 per ton ($2 per cwt).
