China raises 2018 rare earth smelting, separation quota by 15 pct y/y

BEIJING, Aug 27 (Reuters) -


* China's Ministry for Industry and Information Technology(MIIT)said on Monday the quota for rare earth smelting and separationin the country had been set at 115,000 tonnes.
* The total, set jointly with China's Natural ResourcesMinistry,is up 15 percent from 100,000 tonnes in 2017.
* China is the world's top producer of rare earths, a groupof 17elements used in magnets and consumer electronics that have beenthreatened with U.S. import tariffs.
* The Natural Resources Ministry said in late July China'srareearth mining output quota had been set at 120,000 tonnes for2018, up 14.3 pct from 105,000 tonnes in 2017. (Reporting by Tom Daly; Editing by Gopakumar Warrier)
