Tariff fears put a small dent in consumer sentiment for June

The numbers: The final reading of the University of Michigan's consumer-sentiment index in June was 98.2, slightly above May's level of 98. The initial reading was 99.3.

Economists expected a reading of 99.

What happened: It wasn't a big dip but concerns about the impact from tariffs weighed, according to the University of Michigan.

The big picture: Consumer sentiment has climbed markedly, from a low of 55.8 in 2011, as the job market has improved. Consumers are still anticipating that the economy would produce small additional declines in the unemployment rate as well as higher wage gains, the University of Michigan reported.

What they're saying: "The potential impact of tariffs on the domestic economy was spontaneously cited by one-in-four consumers, with most expecting a negative impact on the domestic economy (21% out of 26%). The primary concerns were a downshift in the future pace of economic growth and an uptick in inflation," said Richard Curtin, the chief economist of the surveys of consumers.

Consumers forecast 3% inflation in the year ahead, up from 2.6% a year ago and the strongest growth rate in nearly four years.

Market reaction: The release didn't do anything to derail the stock market, which this week has reacted to news on the trade front. On Friday, however, the Dow industrials DJIA, +0.23% were up by more than 250 points.
