Running a Hedge Fund for a Canadian Megabank
For five years, Rob oversaw an internal hedge fund at one of Canada’s top five banks… And he had the freedom to invest in pretty much any stock in any sector… and to take both long and short positions.
And he generated outstanding results—mind you, his tenure there included the Great Financial Crisis of 2007–2009.

Early on, he focused on the Canadian public markets. And delivered results such as these:
- He nailed the bottom by buying shares of West Vault Mining (TSXV:WVM) at $0.30 in June 2019 and sold at $1.50 one year later for a 400% gain.
- He bought Franco Nevada (NYSE:FNV) shares in Feb 2016 for US$47.85 and sold it 1.5 years later for US$77.42, for a 62% gain while perfectly timing the bottom for gold—again.
- In October 2023, he made a recommendation to a Toronto hedge fund to buy Agnico Eagle (TSX:AEM), as gold appeared poised to break out. AEM was trading at $65 at that time and is currently trading at $160, for a gain of almost 150% in less than two years.
- As a research analyst early in his career, he started covering Absolute Software (TSX:ABT) at $0.40—and the stock soared to $38 after, for a 9,400% return.
- He initiated coverage on Catamaran (TSX:CCT) below $2 per share—and the price climbed as high as $76 after that… A 3,700% return.
- He recommended Glentel (TSX:GLN) at $1.73—and it was acquired at $26.50 for a 1,431% return.
