Tokenized gold has drawn fresh attention after Tether Gold (XAUT) reached a market capitalization of roughly $3.3 billion on October 27, 2026, according to CoinGecko data. Each XAUT token represents one fine troy ounce of physical gold held in Swiss vaults, and its price tracked spot gold near $4,055–$4,060 that day. The World Gold Council reported on October 19, 2026, that the broader digital gold market, which includes tokenized products and vaulted digital accounts, stood at about $45–55 billion. Tokenized gold itself has expanded rapidly and is one piece of a larger discussion about whether digital forms of gold ownership could grow meaningfully in the years ahead.
Gold investment trends in 2026 still center on physical bars, coins and exchange-traded funds, yet tokenized gold offers a different structure. It lets holders move claims on allocated metal across blockchain networks at any hour. That structure raises practical questions about custody, verification and the path from a digital token back to physical bars.
How does Tether Gold XAUT work?
Tether Gold is issued by TG Commodities, S.A. de C.V., an El Salvador company within the Tether group. One XAUT equals one fine troy ounce of gold that meets London Good Delivery standards. Those are the large, high-purity bars (typically around 400 troy ounces) used in the professional bullion market. The metal sits in Swiss vaults. Holders can use a lookup tool to see the serial numbers, weight and purity of the bars linked to their blockchain address. Quarterly attestations by BDO have confirmed that reserves equal or exceed the ounces of tokens in circulation. On June 30, 2026, one such report listed more than 707,000 fine troy ounces against a matching number of tokens.
Tokens can be transferred on supported blockchains such as Ethereum. They are divisible to small fractions, so someone can hold exposure to a fraction of an ounce. Physical redemption is possible for verified holders, but it normally requires enough tokens to match one full London Good Delivery bar, roughly 430 ounces. Smaller amounts are typically settled in cash. Fees apply on primary-market purchases and redemptions. The token is not a dollar stablecoin; its value moves with the gold price.
Why has the XAUT market cap reached $3.3 billion?
XAUT’s market capitalization stood near $3.3 billion on October 27, 2026, with a circulating supply of roughly 809,000 tokens, according to CoinGecko. Its price of about $4,055 that day closely tracked the spot gold price, which other market sources placed near $4,060. Trading volume on the day was reported in the range of roughly $95 million to $190 million across different trackers. XAUT has been the largest single gold-backed token for some time and, together with PAX Gold (PAXG), accounts for the large majority of the public tokenized gold market. Token Terminal data around October 20, 2026, placed the wider tokenized commodity market near $8.1 billion, with XAUT the largest component.
Growth has been helped by rising gold prices earlier in 2026 and by increased on-chain activity. Cumulative spot trading volumes in gold-backed tokens exceeded $90 billion in the first quarter of 2026, more than the total for all of 2025, according to the World Gold Council. Some platforms also accept XAUT as collateral in decentralized finance applications, which can add utility beyond simple holding.
What does the World Gold Council say about the broader digital gold market?
In a report published on October 19, 2026, with Boston Consulting Group, the World Gold Council estimated the retail digital gold market at $45–55 billion, equal to roughly 370 tonnes. That figure covers both tokenized gold and vaulted digital gold accounts. Tokenized gold alone had grown about fivefold since late 2024 to around $6 billion, led by XAUT and PAXG. The report’s base case projects the digital gold market could expand at roughly 27 percent a year to $160–170 billion by 2031. A bull case reaches $270–280 billion if barriers fall faster, while a bear case stays near $70–80 billion. The Council also identified up to $700 billion in latent demand that could be unlocked if investors gain greater trust, clearer redemption paths, better regulation and easier access through familiar channels such as banking apps.
Nearly nine in ten surveyed retail investors said they would consider digital gold under the right conditions. Much of the potential new demand would come from people who do not currently own gold, particularly younger investors. The report notes that trust is the single largest barrier. Clear proof of backing, independent audits and a practical way to convert tokens into physical metal matter most to many buyers.
What risks come with tokenized gold?
Tokenized gold carries risks that physical bars in a personal vault or a traditional ETF do not share in the same way. Custody depends on the issuer and the vault operator. In the case of XAUT, the gold is held by a Swiss custodian described as a related party, and token holders rather than the issuer hold the claim on the metal. Redemption of physical bars requires a large minimum, so most holders would receive cash instead of metal. Blockchain transfers involve network fees and the risk of sending tokens to the wrong address or on an unsupported network. Regulatory treatment varies by country and can change. Counterparty risk exists if the issuer or custodian faces operational or legal problems. Price tracking is generally close, but spreads, fees and liquidity can differ from the wholesale gold market. Investors who want physical delivery or the lowest possible counterparty exposure may still prefer allocated bars or coins.
Gold price forecast discussions for 2026 continue to focus on interest rates, the US dollar and central-bank buying. Tokenized gold products will move with the underlying gold price, plus any premium or discount driven by token-specific supply, demand and fees. They do not change the fundamental drivers of the gold price itself.
