UBS Stays Bullish on Gold Despite Fed Rate Risks. Could Central Bank Buying Drive the Next Rally?

September 09, 2026, Author - Ben McGregor

Fifty basis points of tightening is a near-term tax on the metal. Twenty-two months of Chinese official buying is the other ledger. UBS is telling clients not to confuse the two.

Why are central banks buying gold? Could central bank buying push gold prices higher? How central bank buying affects gold prices? UBS’s latest note, circulated September 9, answers those questions without pretending the Federal Reserve has left the building. After a 15% rise in the first three weeks of August, bullion gave back about 5.5%. The Swiss house now expects the Fed to raise policy rates by 50 basis points this year. Higher real yields and a firmer dollar are “likely to remain a near-term headwind.” That is the Fed-risk clause. The bullish clause is that UBS does not treat the next FOMC as the whole gold investment case. Pullbacks, in that language, are a place to “build strategic exposure.” Gold is “more than a tactical expression of the next Fed decision.”

The medium-term UBS gold price target that still sits on the page is $5,000 an ounce in the first half of 2027. That is the UBS gold forecast that matters for a two-year sleeve. It is not a gold price prediction 2026 for Friday’s close. Spot after last week’s 162,000-job print tagged about $4,365 and settled nearer $4,430. CPI and a September 15–16 FOMC still sit in the window.

Gold stocks to buy, buy gold stocks and best gold stocks 2026 will not be listed here. Canadian gold stocks are businesses with diesel bills. A UBS paragraph does not pay the mill.

What UBS Changed — and What It Did Not

The change is the rate path. Earlier UBS work had the Fed holding this year and easing in 2027, with falling real yields as a pillar under $5,000. The new line books 50 basis points of hikes into 2026. That is a concession to firm U.S. data, to oil that can keep inflation alive, and to a market that has already priced a more hawkish committee — including Waller saying a hot CPI could push him toward a hike.

What did not change is the strategic role. UBS analogizes gold to global equities: a hawkish near-term Fed does not, in their book, cancel AI capex and earnings as an equity thesis, and it does not cancel gold as a portfolio asset. Gold and interest rates still matter in the week. Gold as a strategic asset is the multi-year sentence. Mixing them is how a client buys the dip into a hike and calls it research.

UBS gold forecast 2026 has moved around the year — $5,000 by March in a January path, $5,500 year-end in a July recovery note, $5,000 by first-half 2027 in the August–September work. Readers should use the dated note, not a collage. The September 9 piece is the one that pairs 50 bp of hikes with an unchanged 2027 destination.

Why Are Central Banks Buying Gold?

Reserve composition after 2022. A Treasury is a claim inside someone else’s legal system. A bar in a named vault is not the same claim. Diversification is the polite word. Sanctions insurance is the operating word. Fiscal deficits in the reserve-currency country are the third word.

The People’s Bank of China purchased 650,000 ounces in August — about 20 tonnes — up from 640,000 in July, the largest monthly official add since October 2023, a 22nd consecutive month. Holdings finished August near 76.73 million ounces, or about 2,387 tonnes, still only around 8% of a $3.44 trillion foreign-exchange book. China gold purchases are the visible sleeve of China gold demand. Private jewellery and bars are a second book that can fade when the sticker is $4,400.

PBOC gold buying is not lonely. A recent World Gold Council survey, as cited by UBS, had nearly 90% of responding reserve managers expecting global official gold reserves to rise over the next twelve months, and 45% expecting their own holdings to rise. Q2 official buying was 289 tonnes. UBS’s in-house range for full-year 2026 official purchases is 750 to 1,000 tonnes. Goldman’s parallel work has used something like 50 tonnes a month against a pre-2022 average near 17, with a $4,900 year-end case of its own.

Global gold reserves are still dominated by the United States and a handful of European books with gold shares an order of magnitude above China’s 8%. That gap is why official demand can run for years without looking like a European reserve manager. It is also why “the world is leaving the dollar this quarter” is a caption, not a SAFE table.

How Central Bank Buying Affects Gold Prices

Official ounces come out of the free float. They do not cancel an 8:30 print.

How central bank buying affects gold prices over a year is as a bid that does not need a real-yield excuse. UBS’s own caveat is the honest one: 750–1,000 tonnes “may not be enough to drive prices sharply higher on their own.” They can stabilize the market and offset weaker jewellery. That is a floor story, not a moon-shot story. Gold demand 2026 is official plus ETF plus fabrication. Jewellery already suffered at winter highs near $5,594. Official demand is what kept $4,300 from becoming a new regime.

Could central bank buying push gold prices higher from here? It can support a grind toward the $5,000 H1-2027 handle if real yields eventually roll over — UBS’s remaining pillar — and if Western funds do not dump the ETF on every firm payrolls print. It cannot veto 50 basis points if the committee delivers them. Gold and inflation still interact through the real rate, not through a slogan. Tariffs and energy shocks, as Marc Faber put it in a September 3 interview, keep inflation from rolling over on command. That is a two-sided gold tape: sticky inflation supports the metal, a hike to fight that inflation taxes it.

Gold pullback buying opportunity is UBS’s phrase for the strategic sleeve. It is not this publication’s order ticket. A 5.5% giveback after a 15% August burst is a month inside a cycle that already printed $5,594 and $4,300. Treating every dip as a coupon is how a strategic asset becomes a tactical scar.

Gold Outlook 2026 Versus Gold Outlook 2027

Gold prices 2026 still have to live with the committee UBS just conceded. A 50 bp path, a dollar that can catch a bid if Europe’s 65% gas storage becomes a terms-of-trade shock, and a 10-year that last week sat near 4.8% are the near-term tax. Gold market outlook for the next two weeks is CPI and the statement. Gold rally language belongs on the 2027 page unless those two prints disappoint the hike camp.

Gold safe haven is doing split work. Official buyers treat metal as a reserve asset. Western funds treat it as a rates residual. When those two books agree, the metal runs. When they do not, you get August up and early September down on the same official bid.

Gold mining stocks add torque to whichever book wins the week. Gold mining companies with AISC well below $4,430 feel a $5,000 2027 path in the margin — and feel $5.85 diesel and a 30% metal drawdown if a risk-off smash arrives first. Gold mining investment is a cost curve and a share count. Canadian gold stocks do not receive a cheque when UBS uses the word strategic. They receive a gold price and a permitting clock.

Gold investment opportunities that begin with “UBS is still bullish” and end with a junior ticker are two decisions glued together. Gold stocks to watch remains the producer that can fund the dividend if $4,300 retests, not the explorer that needs $5,000 to finance winter.

What Would Break the UBS Case

A Fed that hikes more than 50 bp and keeps hiking into 2027. Official demand that reprints Q1’s 57-tonne quarter instead of Q2’s 289. Jewellery and ETF liquidation that overwhelms 20-tonne Chinese months. A dollar spike on a disorderly yen or European gas event. Any of those leaves $5,000 H1 2027 as a slide. None of them is in Monday’s SAFE table.

The case that survives is the one UBS and the Council keep writing: diversification is multi-year, 8% of Chinese reserves is not an announced ceiling, and 750–1,000 official tonnes is a stabilizer while the committee does what it does.

Conclusion

UBS stays bullish on gold despite booking 50 basis points of Fed hikes into 2026. The destination on that note is still $5,000 in the first half of 2027. Could central bank buying drive the next rally? It can underpin one. UBS does not claim it can launch one alone. Why are central banks buying? To change the mix of a sanctions-aware reserve book. How does that buying affect prices? As a floor under jewellery weakness, not as tomorrow’s open.

Gold price forecast at UBS is now two clocks: a hawkish year and a strategic 2027. Gold price outlook for this week is still a table. Leave buy gold stocks in the keyword box. Count the official tonnes. Then count the basis points.
