Michael Gentile: Buy Canada Now as AI Rollover Supports Junior Mining Stocks

Michael Gentile of Bastion Asset Management argues that an AI rollover and new Canadian tax and permitting measures create a strong setup for junior mining stocks.

Michael Gentile, founding partner and senior portfolio manager at Bastion Asset Management, joined Peter Granwich for a Saturday morning discussion of the macro outlook and junior mining stocks. Gentile has a newsletter and holds large positions in multiple juniors. He sees short-term volatility from an AI and tech rollover as a positive for gold and Canadian explorers.

What is Gentile’s macro outlook for junior mining stocks?

Gentile said the biggest short-term risk to the junior mining market is also the biggest positive. “The rollover of the AI trade, the tech stocks, the euphoria around tech reminded me very very similarly to the late 1990s when the .com boom rolled over which when that boom rolled over, it finally kicked off a multi- multi-year almost multi-decade rally in commodities from 01 to 2014 2015.” He notes strong gold fundamentals from rising yields driven by debt concerns, record producer margins and free cash flow, yet total apathy in the stocks because capital is distracted by AI. “Just a small fraction of that 40% rotating into gold and precious metals will cause huge amount of buying for the sector.” Short-term liquidity sales of gold alongside tech have occurred before, in 2001, 2008 and 2020, after which gold led the recovery. These are Gentile’s opinions based on historical patterns. Gold trading near recent lows is a market fact.

Why does Gentile say buy Canada now?

Gentile’s major theme on a recent European tour was “buy Canada now.” He already held about 50 percent of his portfolio in Canada and has moved toward 80 percent. Two policy changes under the Carney government stand out. First, an accelerated depreciation or super credit lets companies expense the full capital cost of a mine in the first year. “Instead of getting 15 million… you get 30% of a billion in your first year, you get $300 million tax refund on your first year.” Agnico Eagle’s CEO has said it equates to about a 20 percent reduction in after-tax build cost. Second, a move toward one project, one permitting path, and one agency aims to shorten timelines that lengthened under the prior dual provincial-federal system. Gentile argues that shorter timelines and lower effective costs raise net present values for Canadian assets and improve the M&A case. These policy descriptions and the portfolio shift are Gentile’s statements; the existence of the measures is a government fact, while the valuation impact is his analysis.

How does Gentile view specific junior mining stocks?

Gentile highlighted several holdings as advanced or de-risking. On Northisle Copper and Gold (North Ale), he called it the gold standard of what he wants to see: an under-$50 million starting point that systematically de-risks toward a mine. Management has been intentional about de-risking. On Astra, the stock is down about 50 percent year-over-year with roughly half the market cap in cash and a sticky shareholder base; the market focused on a deep target miss while the shallower deposit continues to grow. On Big Ridge Gold in Newfoundland, metallurgical results improved recovery and there are significant ounces in existing tailings that could support early production; permitting can be faster without federal overview. On Cascadia, recent drilling between resource blocks suggests substantial copper and gold growth in a well-infrastructured Yukon location. On Maple Gold, the company has grown resources, refreshed management, and is advancing studies at a low per-ounce valuation in Quebec. On Silver Crown Royalties, he described a royalty model focused on silver byproduct that generates free cash flow and offers multi-decade compounding potential. These company comments are Gentile’s views and portfolio context. Specific cash, resource or market-cap figures are as he stated them.

Why does this matter to investors?

The combination of an AI-driven equity rollover, record mining-company cash flows, and Canada-specific tax and permitting improvements creates a setup Gentile has not seen in recent years. For retirement-age readers, the longer holding periods typical of European investors and the multi-year development timelines of junior mining stocks mean short-term price swings may matter less than the underlying de-risking and policy tailwinds. Gentile’s concentration in Canada and his preference for companies that can reach production or attract M&A without excessive dilution is a framework others can examine. Past cycles do not guarantee future results, and junior equities remain high-risk.

What to watch next

  • November 3, 2026: US midterm elections. Outcomes can influence risk appetite and rate expectations that affect both tech and metals.
  • November 6, 2026: US employment report. Labor data will shape growth and Fed views that Gentile links to the broader backdrop.
  • December 9, 2026: FOMC decision. Any shift in hike odds can alter the near-term liquidity pressure Gentile described.
  • Company updates on permitting, drilling, and studies at Canadian juniors, particularly those advancing under the new accelerated framework.
  • Further signs of capital rotation out of AI-related names and into resource equities.

A dated risk is the recent gold and silver decline that accompanied equity weakness. Gentile noted gold near $3,900 and the parallel selling that occurs when portfolios need liquidity. Whether the sector finds a bottom depends on the duration of the tech adjustment and incoming policy and economic data.
