JPMorgan Private Bank’s Yuxuan Tang said on October 28, 2026, that gold still faces downside risk after its recent sell-off because liquidity remains thin and interest rates have room to rise. Spot gold traded near $4,060 an ounce on October 28, 2026, according to market data feeds. Canadian gold stocks such as Agnico Eagle Mines (TSX: AEM), Franco-Nevada (TSX: FNV), Wheaton Precious Metals (TSX: WPM) and Kinross Gold (TSX: K) often track movements in the metal, so the near-term view from the private bank matters for how these shares trade while the gold price outlook stays under pressure.
Yuxuan Tang, head of rates and foreign-exchange strategy for Asia at JPMorgan Private Bank, told Bloomberg in an interview published October 28, 2026, that gold remains exposed to further weakness. She said the market is “quite fragile” with almost no technical support below $4,000 an ounce. Tang stated, “Gold will find a solid bottom when rates peak.” The private bank expects the Federal Reserve to raise rates in December 2026 and again in the first quarter of 2027. Those moves could push the yield on the 10-year US Treasury note to a peak of 5.25 percent to 5.5 percent around mid-2027, up from just over 5 percent at the time of the interview. Higher yields tend to reduce demand for gold because the metal does not pay interest or a dividend.
Tang also noted that once the Federal Reserve finishes its tightening cycle, gold’s appeal as a hedge against economic and policy risks could support a stronger rebound later in 2027. Some secondary reports of the interview mentioned private bank targets near $4,500 by mid-2027 and $5,000 by the end of that year, though those specific longer-term figures appear less widely confirmed in primary coverage than the near-term downside comments. The main point Tang emphasized is that a durable floor is hard to call while rate-hike risk remains open.
The Federal Reserve held its federal funds rate target range at 3.75 percent to 4 percent on October 28, 2026, in a 10-2 vote, according to the official FOMC statement. Two members preferred a quarter-point increase. Economic activity was described as expanding at a “strong pace,” while inflation remained elevated. Chair Kevin Warsh said at the subsequent press conference that more data would help decide the path ahead. JPMorgan Private Bank’s call for further hikes in December and early 2027 sits alongside market pricing that still assigns meaningful odds to additional tightening if inflation does not cool.
Gold is a non-yielding asset, which means it does not generate interest the way a Treasury bond does. When real yields (nominal yields minus expected inflation) rise, the relative attractiveness of gold can fall, which often contributes to gold price volatility. A stronger US dollar, which can accompany higher rates, also tends to pressure dollar-priced gold. Thin liquidity in the gold market, as Tang described, can amplify those moves because fewer large buyers or sellers are active to cushion declines. For investors watching the gold market outlook, the next key Federal Reserve meeting is scheduled for December 8-9, 2026, when updated economic projections are also due.
Canadian gold stocks often move with the gold price because higher bullion prices generally improve margins for producers and royalty companies, while lower prices can compress them. Agnico Eagle Mines, Franco-Nevada, Wheaton Precious Metals and Kinross Gold are large, liquid names listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange that many North American investors follow when they look at gold mining stocks or gold investment opportunities. Their shares do not move one-for-one with the metal, because company-specific factors such as production volumes, costs and asset mix also matter, but the gold price forecast remains a central driver.
Agnico Eagle Mines operates large gold mines in Canada, Finland, Australia and Mexico. It is a senior producer whose all-in sustaining costs (AISC, the full cost to produce an ounce including sustaining capital) have recently been reported in the mid-$1,400s per ounce range in prior quarters. Lower gold prices would narrow the margin between the realized gold price and those costs. Franco-Nevada is a royalty and streaming company that does not operate mines itself. It receives a share of production or revenue from a portfolio of assets, so its results are less exposed to operating cost inflation but still depend on the gold price and the performance of the underlying mines. Wheaton Precious Metals is another major streamer that buys gold and silver at fixed prices from operators and sells them at market prices. Kinross Gold is a diversified producer with operations in the Americas and West Africa. On September 23, 2026, Kinross said it expected 2026 and 2027 production 2 percent to 3 percent below the low end of prior guidance because of extreme weather and operational issues at La Coipa and Round Mountain, which shows how company-specific events can compound metal-price pressure.
For producers such as Agnico Eagle and Kinross, a gold price that stays near or below recent levels reduces the cash generated per ounce. Guidance (the company’s own expected production range for the year) becomes harder to beat if realized prices are lower than the assumptions used when guidance was set. Royalty and streaming companies such as Franco-Nevada and Wheaton are somewhat more insulated from mine-site cost overruns, yet their revenue still scales with the gold price. If the metal spends longer below $4,000 before finding the bottom Tang described, the near-term earnings trajectory for the group can stay muted even if longer-term structural demand from central banks remains intact.
One real risk already visible for Agnico Eagle is operational disruption at the Barnat pit within the Canadian Malartic complex, which some analysts have flagged as a factor that can affect near-term production and costs. For Franco-Nevada, uncertainty continues around the Cobre Panama mine in Panama, where formal discussions about an orderly closure have been underway; any further delay in deliveries from that asset would affect the company’s gold-equivalent ounce sales. Wheaton Precious Metals has a pipeline of development assets expected to add production toward its goal of roughly 1.2 million gold-equivalent ounces by 2030, but delays at those projects would slow the growth that supports the streamer’s valuation. Kinross has already disclosed the production guidance reduction noted above, so the risk of further shortfalls at the affected assets is no longer purely hypothetical. These are dated operational facts rather than hypothetical scenarios.
Tang described the gold market as “quite fragile” with limited technical support below $4,000. In practical terms, that means a relatively small volume of selling can produce larger price moves because the pool of ready buyers is thinner than usual. Gold price volatility has already been elevated in 2026 after the metal fell from its January highs near $5,400. For Canadian gold stocks, higher volatility in the underlying metal often translates into higher share-price swings, which can be amplified by the operating and financial leverage of the mining companies. Royalty and streaming names typically show less volatility than pure producers, but they are not immune when the gold price trend is lower for longer.
Investors who follow the gold investment outlook sometimes look for periods when the metal consolidates after a decline. Tang’s view is that a solid bottom is more likely once the rate-hike cycle ends rather than before it. That timeline depends on incoming inflation data and the Federal Reserve’s response. Until then, the combination of thin liquidity and open rate risk can keep gold price volatility elevated, which in turn keeps attention on the earnings releases of the major Canadian gold stocks.
