State Street Investment Management still sees a path for gold to reach the $5,000 area inside its $4,750 to $5,500 base-case range by the end of the first quarter of 2027, even as the metal trades near $4,060 an ounce after a recent sell-off. Canadian gold stocks such as Agnico Eagle Mines (TSX: AEM), Franco-Nevada (TSX: FNV), Wheaton Precious Metals (TSX: WPM) and Kinross Gold (TSX: K) move with bullion prices, so the outlook matters for their cash flow and share prices. The firm reduced the probability of its main scenario to 60 percent from 70 percent because of higher rates and a stronger dollar.

Why Are Gold Prices Falling in 2026?

Gold closed near $4,060 an ounce on October 27, 2026, after trading as high as about $5,400 earlier in the year, according to GoldPrice.com data. The drop of roughly 25 percent from the January peak has come mainly from higher interest rates and rising bond yields. Gold pays no interest or dividend, so when yields on U.S. Treasuries climb, the opportunity cost of holding the metal increases and some investors shift toward bonds or cash.

A stronger U.S. dollar has also weighed on prices, because gold is priced in dollars and becomes more expensive for buyers using other currencies. The Federal Reserve raised rates by 25 basis points in September 2026, and markets have priced in the chance of further increases. Persistent inflation concerns, partly linked to elevated oil prices, have kept the central bank cautious. Short-term traders who bought near the highs have also exited positions, adding to selling pressure even while some longer-term buyers remained active.

On October 28, 2026, the Federal Open Market Committee held the federal funds rate steady at 3.75 percent to 4.00 percent in a 10-2 vote, with two members preferring a hike. Chair Kevin Warsh noted that inflation remains elevated while the economy is expanding at a strong pace. The decision itself was widely expected, but the path of future rate moves continues to shape the gold price forecast 2026.

What Is State Street’s Latest Gold Bullion Forecast?

In its October 2026 Monthly Gold Monitor, the team led by Aakash Doshi, Head of Gold Strategy at State Street Investment Management, maintained a base-case forecast for gold to trade between $4,750 and $5,500 an ounce by the end of the first quarter of 2027. The firm cut the probability of that scenario to 60 percent from 70 percent, citing higher interest rates, a stronger dollar and rising bond yields as tactical headwinds. A bearish scenario of gold remaining between $4,000 and $4,750 carries a 35 percent probability over the next six to nine months.

State Street pointed to structural supports that still give the market a path toward the higher range. These include ongoing central bank and Asian physical demand, plus gold’s role as a portfolio diversifier and monetary hedge. U.S.-listed gold-backed exchange-traded funds recorded substantial inflows in the third quarter, which partly offset earlier outflows. The firm noted that gold has shown resilience even as it tested support near $4,000. This gold price prediction 2027 view sits inside a broader gold market outlook that still sees room for recovery if rate pressures ease.

The $5,000 level sits inside the published range rather than as a standalone target. Recovery would require the metal to move past recent resistance levels and sustain gains as real yields stabilize. Because gold is a non-yielding asset, any further rise in rates or the dollar would make the path more difficult, which is why the probability was lowered.

What Does the Outlook Mean for Canadian Gold Stocks?

Canadian gold stocks often amplify moves in the bullion price because miners and royalty companies generate cash flow from the metal they produce or receive. A sustained recovery toward the upper end of State Street’s range would improve margins for producers and increase the value of future deliveries for streamers and royalty firms. The recent gold market correction has already pressured share prices, so investors watch both the metal and company-specific results.

Agnico Eagle Mines produces gold from mines in Canada, Mexico, Finland and Australia. On October 28, 2026, the company reported third-quarter payable gold production of 814,012 ounces at all-in sustaining costs of $1,648 per ounce. All-in sustaining costs, or AISC, measure the total cost to produce an ounce of gold after adding sustaining capital and other ongoing expenses to cash costs. The company generated $852 million in free cash flow in the quarter and said it remains on track for its 2026 production and cost guidance. Guidance is the range of expected output and costs a company publishes for the year. One real risk is the expected production reduction at the Barnat pit, which the company said could remove 60,000 to 80,000 ounces in the second half of 2026 and up to 150,000 ounces in each of 2027 and 2028, according to its October 28 release.

Franco-Nevada is a royalty and streaming company that does not operate mines itself. It receives a share of production or revenue from a portfolio of assets in exchange for upfront financing. The company has available capital to pursue new deals, and CEO Paul Brink has said it expects to deploy a good amount of that capital in the next six to twelve months. One real risk is ongoing uncertainty around the Cobre Panamá mine in Panama, where production has been halted and only limited stockpile processing has resumed. The company has noted that the future status of the mine remains unresolved, which affects expected deliveries.

Wheaton Precious Metals also operates as a streaming company, buying fixed percentages of gold and silver production at predetermined prices. It has added large streams in recent years and expects production growth from development assets. Silver made up a larger share of its recent sales mix. One real risk is supplier concentration, because disruptions at a few large mines, such as Antamina, could affect deliveries even though the company does not operate the sites.

Kinross Gold operates mines in the Americas and West Africa. On September 23, 2026, the company lowered its 2026 and 2027 production guidance to about 1.84 million to 1.86 million gold-equivalent ounces per year, or 2 to 3 percent below the prior low end, because of weather and metallurgical issues at La Coipa in Chile and lower rates at Round Mountain in Nevada. It reported third-quarter results on October 28. One real risk is that further operational challenges at these smaller assets could keep production below earlier expectations.

These Canadian gold stocks remain tied to the gold price recovery path. Higher bullion prices would support free cash flow and the ability to fund dividends, buybacks or new investments, while continued weakness would pressure margins and valuations. The gold investment outlook for the shares depends on both the metal’s direction and execution at individual operations.

How Interest Rates and the Dollar Shape the Gold Market Outlook

Higher real yields, which adjust bond yields for inflation, raise the opportunity cost of gold and tend to support the dollar. State Street highlighted these factors when it reduced its base-case probability. The Federal Reserve’s October 28 decision to hold rates steady removed one near-term hike risk, yet markets still watch for signals on December and 2027. A more dovish tone from Chair Warsh or softer inflation data could ease pressure and help gold price recovery, while further tightening would reinforce the headwinds.

Central bank buying and physical demand in Asia have provided a floor near $4,000 in recent weeks, according to multiple market reports. If those buyers stay active while speculative selling slows, the market could stabilize and test higher levels. The gold market correction of 2026 has already brought prices well below the January highs, which changes the starting point for any move toward State Street’s range.

What to Watch

The next Federal Reserve meeting and any updates on the rate path after the October 28 hold will shape near-term sentiment. Inflation data, including the personal consumption expenditures release expected shortly after the meeting, will give more detail on price pressures. Franco-Nevada is scheduled to report third-quarter results on November 11, 2026. Wheaton Precious Metals has indicated a November 5 release date for its quarterly numbers. Company updates on production guidance and any further comments from State Street’s gold team on the probability of the $4,750 to $5,500 range will also matter for the gold price forecast 2026 and Canadian gold stocks.
